We at Magic Moments are so fortunate to be able to establish lasting relationships with the families we serve and these relationships don't end once a magic moment has been fulfilled. The sad reality is that our children live every day either with illness, or with the fear that their illness will reoccur. And though we can't grant more than one magic moment to a child, what we can do is make sure that child and family become part of our permanent Magic Moments community. At Magic Moments it is not just about the magic moment, (although that part is pretty awesome!), it is also about providing a caring support network through our programs and activities that go Beyond The Moment.
Each year, we are offering even more opportunities for our children and families to come together. In 2016 Magic Moments will be hosting FUN-raisers for our previous magic moment recipients across Alabama - like the Valentines Day party for the children and families of the River Region. In addition, we hosted Magic Moments Nights at each of our regional minor league ball parks.
The hallmark of our Beyond the Moment program is our annual Family Camp at Children's Harbor on Lake Martin. For 17 years our Family Camp program has not only provided our children with a summer camp experience they would not ordinarily be able to have, but also gives their parents and caregivers the opportunity to meet and talk to other families in similar circumstances. Each year Magic Moment campers look forward to reuniting with their buddies from across the state and many of our families have become so connected through Family Camp they continue the relationship throughout the year.
In addition, our staff, with the help of our Magic Makers statewide, reach out on a more personal level to our past and current magic moment recipients. When we learn that one of our children is back in the hospital or entering a new phase of treatment, we send get well and birthday cards, visit, and take small gifts and meals. We make sure the child and their family know that we are always there for them.
This is what makes Magic Moments so different from a national wish granting organization; we stay connected to our children and families even beyond the moment. Magic Moments doesn't just say "Goodbye! Have fun on your magic moment!" We say, "We can't wait to see you when you get back!'"
